Third District Service Academy Day a Success!

March 26, 2022

New Bern, N.C.– This morning, Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) hosted a Third District Service Academy Day at Craven Community College for all 7th-12th grade students interested in applying for congressional nomination to a U.S. Service Academy. The well-attended event provided an opportunity students, parents, and educators to gain the knowledge and expertise needed to submit a quality application to one of U.S. Service Academies. "One of the most rewarding aspects of my job as a Member of Congress is having the honor of nominating young men and women from Eastern North Carolina to attend our distinguished Service Academies," said Rep. Murphy. "I am grateful to all of the students, families, and Service Academy representatives who took the time to participate in our event, and I look forward to reviewing the applications!"

Background: Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. Service Academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment. Congressman Murphy may nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district.
