Murphy Votes Against Legislation Providing Amnesty to Millions of Illegal Immigrants

March 18, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6 and H.R. 1603. Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) released the following statement after voting against the bills:

"At a time when there is a humanitarian crisis at our southern border, House Democrats sadly think it's a good idea to pass legislation that would incentivize even more illegal immigration," said Murphy. "The prospect of this legislation passing will encourage thousands of migrants to quickly flood the border so they can receive amnesty before these bills are signed into law. The situation at the border will continue to deteriorate if these bills pick up more momentum."

"Legal immigration has been the foundation of this nation's growth. We are the world's melting pot and we celebrate that diversity. However, if these two bills were made law, more than one million individuals who entered this country illegally, as well as their dependents, would be rewarded for breaking the law. We are a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation that was founded on its belief in the rule of law.

"Instead of passing these two bills today, the House of Representatives should have taken up my legislation – the Guard Our Border Act – which would reassign the unnecessary National Guard presence surrounding the Capitol to the southern border. The National Guard was created to respond to domestic emergencies. While there is no longer a known credible threat in Washington, there is an actual crisis occurring at the border and we need to provide law enforcement there with the assistance they need."
