Murphy Votes Against H.R. 3233

May 19, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 3233.

"The shocking events that took place on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol were a disgrace to our country's proud history. Political violence should never be tolerated in a society that embraces free speech, open debate and respectful discourse.

"Hundreds of individuals involved in the Capitol riot have been arrested for their involvement and even more arrests are expected to be made in the future. These people, who engaged in criminal activity, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"Unfortunately, Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer sought to politicize a potential January 6th commission from the very beginning. Since they dragged their feet, several bipartisan investigations have been launched and are fully capable of finishing the job.

"Make no mistake, Democrats are planning to use what should be a bipartisan effort as a political weapon to smear Republicans. They will use innuendo and hearsay to push forth a narrative that furthers their political goals. That is not what our nation needs at such a critical juncture when emotions and polarization are near all-time highs.

"Republicans, including me, have unequivocally condemned the riot at the Capitol on January 6th. I have also condemned the riots we witnessed last summer that destroyed homes and businesses in American cities. The same cannot be said of Democrats, who condemned political violence only when it was politically expedient for them.

"I voted against this measure today. Not because I don't want what happened fully investigated, but because we need it to be a fair and broad investigation and that is not how this legislation is crafted."
