Murphy Amendment Passes Unanimously in Higher Education Act Markup

November 1, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Greg Murphy (NC-03) offered an amendment to promote transparency in higher education expense reporting, which was adopted unanimously by a vote of 47-0 on Thursday. The amendment would require colleges and universities that increase non-instructional spending by more than five percent annually to disclose the increase to current and prospective students. Additionally, it requires an analysis of the expected impact these increases have on tuition, despite not having instructional impacts on students.

"With the average price of college rapidly increasing, the least we can ask of our colleges and universities is to be transparent about how much they are spending on costs that do not contribute to teaching students," said Murphy. "On the whole, the Democrats' higher education bill is a bloated misuse of taxpayer money, costing hundreds of billions of dollars, while doing very little to decrease the cost of college or provide meaningful job placement to those looking for a lasting career after graduation. Though I cannot support this bill in its current form, I'm glad I was able to reach across the aisle and improve it with my amendment."
